History of the pool ball
The history of pool balls is an interesting story. In the beginning, pool table balls were made of stone but, once pool became an indoor game, pool balls were changed to hard rubber or wood. Wood was more common as it was easy to shape, plentiful and inexpensive. In the 1600s brass and ivory pool table balls were introduced but only the wealthy could afford the cost of ivory. Ivory balls weren't very dependable, and the process to make one could take up to two years as the tusk from an elephant had to be properly processed. A rich and glossy finish was present on ivory pool balls, because of the gelatin present in the tusks. Even with all of their faults, ivory balls had more or less replaced wooden balls by about 1800. In 1863 a New York firm offered $10,000 to anybody who could produce a suitable replacement for ivory pool table balls. In 1869, an American chemist named John Wesley Hyatt unknowingly produced the world's first plastic pool table ball when he mixed nitrocellulose with camphor under high pressure to form celluloid.
Why choose Aramith pool balls
Today, Aramith pool balls are the only the only pool balls in the world made of pure phenolic resin. Most pool balls today are made from polyester or other polymers. This material has been tested to last up to five times longer than other pool balls. The phenolic resin of the Aramith pool balls creates an extra hard vitrified phenolic surface. Overtime, the Aramith pool balls are worth the investment as the phenolic surface doesn’t wear as quickly as other pool balls. The Aramith pool balls phenolic structure is used for a balance of density to control speed, direction, spin, impact and rebound in the game. The phenolic resin offers the unique advantage of a completely stabilized material which allows the center of gravity at the center of each ball to produce the ultimate, accurate roll. Far more important than ball tolerances are the balls rebound capacities. Only predictable rebounds allow for strategic positioning. The unique elasticity of the phenolic in Aramith pool balls has been calibrated to offer the optimal level of rebound control.
The exclusive use of Aramith pool balls by the majority of professional tours, pool federations, amateur leagues, championships, and tournaments worldwide is an undisputed endorsement of the quality and reputation of the superior performance of Aramith pool balls.
