Pool and Billiards
Historically the term for any cue sport was pool and billiard. Today, people often refer to the terms to pool and billiard together. While the familiar names of pool and billiard are used around the world, the term billiard actually encompasses many subdivisions of games including pool. Pool and Billiard games have a long and rich history that goes all the way back to the 15 century!
There are three general subdivisions of billiard games:
1) Games played on tables without pockets, including among others balk line and straight rail, cushion caroms, three cushion billiards and artistic billiards
2) The terms pool and billiard are generally used to describe games played on a table with six pockets, including among others 8-ball (the world's most widely played cue sport), 9-ball, straight pool, one-pocket and bank pool.
3) Snooker is technically considered a pocket billiards game, but is generally classified separately.
Differences between pool and Billiards
The differences between pool and billiard can be confusing. A great summary is that billiards is played on a table that has no pockets, and with three balls. Pool is played on a table that has six pockets, and is played with nine or fifteen balls, plus a cue ball. Snooker is played on a table that has six pockets which are smaller than pool pockets, even though the table is larger, and has fifteen pink numberless balls, and numbered balls from two through seven, plus a cue ball.
History
Some people think that the difference between pool and billiard is nothing more than semantics. Most people would be surprised to find that the origin of the word pool is quite entertaining. The real name for what we call pool was "pocket billiards". Pocket Billiards is just a version of Billiards. In the old days (19 century) there used to be poolrooms....but not the poolroom that you know today. These were betting parlors where people came in to bet on horse race or games of poker! They were called poolrooms because everything involved a "pool" of money. While people sat around and waiting on results, they starting installing pocket billiard tables and people of course would gamble. So the name "pool" became attached to billiards simply because of the betting. This is why pool and billiard are often linked together. It had nothing to do with actually playing the game. So when people say "do you want to shoot pool" or "let's play pool"....they don't know it, but what that meant in the olden days was do you want to make a bet.
