In 1756 nearly 60 acres of timber were used to construct the warship "Royal George". It was the flagship of the British Fleet. In 1772 it capsized off the Isle of Wright. After many years the Thurston Company acquired a quantity of the ship oak timbers. The wood that had been underwater for nearly 40 years had become petrified.
